Sam was our neighbor and looked after the house where we stayed a few summers ago. He raced small sailboats on the lake every weekend and seemed to know everything about the lake—and everyone who lived there. They called him “the mayor.” We had planned to have a drink with him the following summer, but he passed away that winter.
